Step Flashing 

  • Step Flashing is a 6"x6"x8" piece of flashing that comes in bundles of 100 pieces. 
  • Step flashing is used on SIDE WALLS. Use step flashing on the SIDES of chimneys. 
  • The first piece of step flashing is cut in the center and applied over the top of the starter shingle.
  • As shingles are installed step flashing is installed creating a new layer of protection for every shingle.
  • When step flashing is finished, house wrap is countered over step flashing. 
  • When a Zip Board Style product is used Step flashing is taped over the top. 
  • Benefits of step flashing:
    • A. If water gets under the shingles, step flashing is layered will bring water back onto roof surface
      B. In step flashing tar or roof cement is not required
      C. Less chance water will penetrate vertical walls
  • Kickout flashing diverts water away from the wall on the bottom of the roof. It the the last piece of step flashing and is bent.
